One Cause Programme Summary

 

One Cause is currently in Year 1 and Year 3 of its programmes at Auro School in Uganda and at Nirvana School in India respectively.

Current status of our projects (Feb 2011):

 

Auro School,Tororo, Uganda

 

  1. Sponsor a Child – we have managed to get 45 students sponsored for their education at the school this year. At just £70 a year, this will pay for the uniforms for all students and pay for their fees that go towards paying the teachers’ salaries.  Project Complete.

 

  1. Feed a Child – for effective education, effective nutrition is required. We have sponsored meals for all the students and teachers this year. Project Ongoing.

  1. Investment in Books the school urgently required technical text books to be used for the bricklaying, carpentry, tailoring and English Language classes. We identified the key books required through our discussions with the teachers and funded them in 2010. Project Complete.

 

  1. Investment in Materials & Equipment the school also urgently required equipment used in the courses such as: garments, lining, zippers, scissors, needles, threads for tailoring course, geometry sets, pit sand, river sand, trowels for the bricklaying course, sandpaper, wood, hammers, saws, mallets, tape measures for the carpentry course, and a CD player for the English course.  One Cause bought all of these to get it all started! Project Complete.

  1. Sustain projects –
    we have invested in a pilot project that generates revenue for the school thereby reducing reliance on external funding.  Project Ongoing.

 

  1. Apprenticeship scheme – our interest is in the end to end implementation of the courses that we are running in a student’s life. We will be aiming to implement an apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with a local employer. This project will continue to be assessed as the school grows. Project Ongoing.

  1. Parents Engagement projects –
    it is vital that we engage parents in their students learning at the school.  One Cause has funded 2 sports days at the school in 2010. Project Complete.

 

  1. Management training – for a successful institution, it is key that the staff running it have adequate skills.  One Cause sent all the teachers on a teacher training course to refresh their teaching experience and also sent the administration staff on courses that would help in the day to day administration of the school.

  1. Administration equipment –
    for effective management and administration of the school, we needed laptops, printer, scanner and a bicycle. Through a laptop appeal in 2010, we managed to get all the computing equipment required and have handed these over to Auro School. Project Complete.

 

  1. Volunteer scheme – the school urgently needs volunteers to help in the many projects ongoing at the school, teaching, administration, etc. One Cause helps facilitate this scheme here in the UK to aid prospective volunteers find areas of activity in which they are interested to help out! We have one volunteer at the school next at the end of Feb 2011! Project Complete.


Current status of our projects (Feb 2011):

 

Nirvana School, Tamil Nadu, India

 

  1. Sponsor a Child – we have managed to get 48 students sponsored for their education at the school this year. At just £70 a year, this will pay for the uniforms for all students and pay for their fees that go towards paying the teachers’ salaries.  Project Complete.

 

  1. Sponsor a Teacher – we have managed to get 6 key teachers sponsored for at the school this year. This will help in retaining better skilled teachers at the school and tackling the high turnover of teachers at the school that causes endless disruption to the students' education. Project Complete.

  1. Classroom repainting & cupboards–
    One Cause has funded the repainting of all classes at the school to improve the lighting and provide for better learning. This is expected to complete by March 2011. We have also purchased cupboards for the classes. Project Ongoing.

 

  1. Investment in Broadband we continue with our investment in internet connectivity at the school enabling it to use internet technologies within its training more effectively. Project Complete.

  1. Investment in Sports Equipment
    – we continue to encourage the school in utilising sports to improve learning, increase team building and so on. One Cause invested in sports equipment at the school to ensure that it has sufficient equipment for student use. Project Complete.

 

  1. English for all Students – we continue our focus in spoken English. We have funded an external training provider to come and provide weekly English coaching for all classes. Project Complete.

  1. Apprenticeship scheme –
    our interest is in the end to end implementation of the courses that we are running in a student’s life. We will be aiming to implement an apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with a local employer. This project will continue to be assessed as the school grows. Project Ongoing.

 

  1. Investment in Computing books (Primary, Secondary school & Adult courses) – One Cause has continued investment within the computing side with investment in teaching material for both the primary school and the adult education centre courses (Desktop Publishing). Project Complete.

  1. Parents Engagement projects –
    it is vital that we engage parents in their students learning at the school.  One Cause is funding 2 parent events at the school – a mothers’ day and a parents’ evening. The mothers’ day was held on 19th Feb 2011 and the parents’ day is due to be held in March 2011. Project Ongoing.

 

  1. Management training – for a successful institution, it is key that the staff running it have adequate skills.  One Cause is sponsoring 2 key teachers on further education – with both reading for a Masters in English Language. Project Complete.

  1. Administration equipment –
    for effective management and administration of the school, we needed to get laptops, printers and a scanner. Through a laptop appeal in 2010, we managed to get all the computing equipment required and have sent 7 laptops and a scanner to the school so far.  Project Ongoing.

 

  1. Volunteer scheme – the school urgently needs volunteers to help in the many projects ongoing at the school, teaching, administration, etc. One Cause helps facilitate this scheme here in the UK to aid prospective volunteers find areas of activity in which they are interested to help out! We had one volunteer who visited the school for 10 weeks in Oct 2010 and have one volunteer at the school next in March 2011! Project Complete.

  1. House System –
    We helped implement a house system at the school in 2010 to improve learning and promote teamwork and leadership. As part of this, we also funded monthly prizes for good performance.  Project Complete.

 

  1. Investment in micro industries – We invested in a mini printing firm set up set up by ex-students, helped them with business planning and invested in a website and purchased their first lot of printed cards! Portion of the firms profits are given back to Nirvana school.  Project Complete.

  1. Investment in adult education course –
    We continued investing in adult education courses (tailoring, desktop publishing, computer hardware, etc throughout 2010 and the start of this year.  Project Complete.

We will be aiming to implement an apprenticeship scheme in conjunction with a local employer. This project will continue to be assessed as the school grows. Project Ongoing.
